A pastor was killed and two others injured during a shooting at Starrville Methodist Church in Winona on Sunday morning.

The shooter was found hiding from police in the church bathroom shortly before the shooting. The suspect had evaded police after a two-hour manhunt Saturday night.

Larry Christian with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office said the pastor drew his gun and ordered the man to stop. The shooter was able to lunge at the pastor and get the pistol.

The suspect then shot the pastor along with another person before he ran from the church and stole a vehicle from the church parking lot. Another person at the church was injured in a fall.

The 911 call came at 9:21 a.m.

Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement, “Our hearts are with the victims and the families of those killed or injured in this terrible tragedy. I am grateful for the law enforcement officers who apprehended the suspect, and I ask Texans to join Cecilia and me in praying for those affected by this horrific shooting. The State of Texas is working closely with first responders and local officials to ensure that justice is served and that the Starrville community has the resources it needs during this time.”
