On Sunday, April 19th at approximately 11:39am, the Rockwall Police Department was notified that law enforcement officers from multiple jurisdictions were traveling east on State Highway 66 toward the City of Rockwall in pursuit of a bus that had been hijacked by an armed suspect.
The bus traveled through multiple cities including Garland, Rowlett, Sachse, and Rockwall where the gunman was firing out of the bus at officers prior to entering Rockwall.
One of the pursuing law enforcement agencies requested for the Rockwall Police Department to provide assistance by deflating the bus tires. A Rockwall police officer placed a tire deflation device (spike strip) in the eastbound lanes of State Highway 66 on the east side of the Lake Ray Hubbard shoreline. The bus drove over the tire deflation device and made a U-Turn at SH66 and Willow Bend.
The bus traveled west on SH66 and the suspect fired gunshots at law enforcement officers from multiple jurisdictions before leaving the City of Rockwall. Rockwall PD officers did not fire their weapons during the incident and there were no injuries related to gunfire that took place inside the City of Rockwall.
The Rockwall Police Department did not receive a request for further assistance and Rockwall police officers discontinued involvement in the pursuit as it left the City of Rockwall.
According to Garland PD, the bus came to a stop on northbound George Bush just before Liberty Grove after being spiked. One DART employee and one Garland PD officer were shot but both received non-life threatening injuries. The gunman was shot, transported to an area hospital, and was pronounced deceased.
Rockwall PD investigators are checking homes and businesses in the area and have not located anyone who was injured or any property that was damaged by gunfire at this time. Please call the Rockwall Police Department at (972) 771-7717 if you witnessed this incident or have information that may be beneficial to the investigation.
