Janie Wimpee, a lifelong resident of Rockwall County, past Realtor, and granddaughter of Rockwall County pioneers went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 12, 2019, at the age of 95. At the time of her death, she was living at Highland Meadows Health & Rehab, a nursing home facility in Rockwall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Derwood Wimpee, former Rockwall County Judge and World War II veteran, to whom she was married for over 45 years. Judge Wimpee died in 1987. She was also preceded by her grandson, Darrin Harris.
Janie was born on January 19, 1924, on the Barringer farm in Fate Texas to Herbert and Hattie Barringer. Her grandfather and grandmother – William Franklin Barringer and Martha Jane Krider Barringer – were early settlers of Rockwall County, migrating to Texas from North Carolina after the Civil War.
Mrs. Wimpee attended school in Rockwall and graduated from Rockwall High School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rockwall for over 70 years, working in all areas of the church and its ministries from secretary in the church office, teaching Sunday school, preparing meals for church socials, visiting church members and friends who were ill and in her later years – until she herself was unable to do so – she drove friends to church on Sunday. In addition to her active faith and church life, Janie was also a successful Realtor for over 25 years with Harris Realtors and later Ebby Halliday Realtors in Rockwall. She received numerous awards over her 25-year career including Realtor of the Year in 1982, top listing agent and top producer at Harris Realtors and was one of the original inductees into the Rockwall Realtors Hall of Fame. She was respected by her co-workers, competitors and those she assisted in obtaining home ownership during her career.
Janie had a great sense of humor and always had something funny to say to make people laugh. Her outstanding and enduring trait was her care and concern for others. She was always one of the first to help others in need and during her career as a Realtor, she was known to often give-back a portion of her sales commission to young families purchasing their first home. Needless to say, she won the hearts of her customers with her honesty and helpfulness and they returned to her for their real estate needs over and over through the years. She leaves a legacy to her family and friends as one who cared deeply about others and who practiced her religion daily. She is survived by a daughter – Judy Harris and three sons – Jerry, Rick, and Joe Wimpee; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, July 20, 2019, at First Baptist Church, 610 S. Goliad St., Rockwall, TX, 75087. Interment will follow in Rockwall Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 19, 2019, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at The Gathering at Rest Haven Funeral Home-Rockwall Location. The family has requested attire to be business casual.
