Laureta “Rita” Adams Obituary

by Front Porch Rockwall

During the 1950s, Rita and Wayne had 4 children: Jan, Donna, Wayne, and Tom. These were the years when oil companies played “move every three years” so the family lived in Corpus Christi twice, San Antonio twice, Fort Worth, McAllen, and Lafayette, LA. On the third transfer to Houston, the family decided to stay put. They enjoyed their years in Houston, and Rita taught Sunday School, served as an Elder in the Presbyterian Church, did volunteer work with children with cerebral palsy, and was on the board of a coalition of 25 churches that founded the Memorial Assistance Ministries to help disadvantaged persons in Houston. She managed the retail shop there for 10 years and loved the job.

After 26 years in Houston, the couple moved to Tyler. After less than two years, Wayne contracted pancreatic cancer and was gone in two months. Rita remained in Tyler for the next 23 years, spending time visiting her children, traveling to 27 countries, and volunteering by serving as an Elder, managing a church-owned home for indigent cancer patients, delivering Meals on Wheels, and working for the Bethesda Health Clinic for low-income uninsured persons.

Three years ago, Rita moved to Liberty Heights in Rockwall, Texas to be closer to her daughter Donna. She loved her life here with many friends, and spent time reading, working jigsaw and Sudoku puzzles, and playing Rummikub and the card game “Hand and Foot.”

Rita is survived by her sisters: Chip Ricks and Gwyn Beavers, her four children and their families: Jan Williams (Mel), Donna Irons (Mark), Wayne Adams (Carolyn) and Tom Adams (Renee) and nine grandchildren: Jenna Horgan, Mark Williams, Kim Johnson, Joel Johnson, Ami Irons, Tim Irons, David Adams, John Adams and Laura Adams.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, June 29, 2019, at The Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery, 7825 S Broadway Ave, Tyler, TX 75703. Memorial services will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, June 30, 2019, at First Christian Church Rockwall, 3375 Ridge Rd, Rockwall, TX 75032.

Donations to honor Rita may be made to The Presbyterian Children’s Homes & Services, 5920 W. William Cannon Dr. Bldg 3 – Suite 100, Austin, TX, 78749, https://www.pchas.org/.
