by Front Porch Rockwall

Ada Lou Abernathy, age 87, of Heath, TX, passed away May 7, 2019. She was born September 25, 1931, in Heath, TX, to Daniel Webster Myers and Nancy C. (Lemley) Myers.

Ada Lou grew up in Heath, TX. She attended the Heath one-room schoolhouse for her early education and then went to Rockwall High School, where she graduated in 1949. After graduation, Ada Lou started to work at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1950. During this time, she met Benny Abernathy from Pleasant Grove at a Roller Hockey game. They wed on March 14, 1953. Ada and Benny were married for 57 years, until his passing in 2010.

Ada Lou lived in Heath, TX, for most of her life. She and Benny moved to Oakland, CA soon after their marriage when he served in the Army. They moved to Dallas, TX, after his stint in the Army was completed to begin the next chapter of their lives with work and raising a family. They moved to their current home in Heath in 1968.

Ada Lou worked at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company (and Pacific Bell Telephone Company) for her entire career. She retired from Southwestern Bell as an Executive Assistant in 1986 with 36 years of service in the Communications Industry. Ada and Benny also owned and operated A&B Auction Service in Terrell, TX and Copeville, TX, for many years. Benny was the auctioneer and Ada ran the Concession Stand.

In addition to her interest in auctions, estate sales, and garage sales, Ada loved to see new places and experience the wonder of travel. She and Benny enjoyed taking cruises and going to Branson, MO.

Besides caring for family and friends, Ada’s passion in life was to cook, especially to bake wonderful breads and desserts. Her mission was to feed a person’s soul through her baked goods, which she did up until the end of her life. To honor Ada, her daughters captured her cooking expertise by compiling and publishing 2 cookbooks with Ada’s recipes.
