Shirley Juanita (Brown) Adair was born March 26, 1937, in Somerton, AZ, to Della B. Butler and George H. Brown, and passed away at age 81 on March 17, 2019, in Rockwall, TX. Shirley graduated as salutatorian of the 1955 class of Ripley High School in Oklahoma and received her Bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University in 1959. Following graduation, Shirley and her husband Harold lived in many cities, including Milwaukee, WI, Seattle, WA, New Orleans, LA, Huntsville, AL, Orlando, FL, and Nassau Bay, TX, making a final move to Rockwall in 1975.

While living in Milwaukee, Shirley taught English in the public school system. Later in life, she discovered passions for real estate and genealogy. Her career in real estate spanned more than 35 years, primarily representing Rockwall’s Gallery of Homes, Harris Realtors and Ebby Halliday Realtors. Shirley compiled multiple volumes of research related to the genealogy of the Adair, Brown, Beauchamp, Brackett, Glidewell and Thompson families. Her works can be found in the genealogic archives of the Dallas Public Library, Chicago’s Newberry Library, The Family History Library of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Library.

Shirley enjoyed gardening, tennis, music, reading, politics and community engagement. She had a special appreciation for the operas of Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini, the poetry of Robert Frost, and the mysteries of Agatha Christie. She was a member of the Rockwall County Democratic Party and, in 1984, served as a Texas state delegate for civil rights activist and presidential candidate Jesse L. Jackson. Shirley volunteered her time to Helping Hands of Rockwall County, Rockwall Friends of the Library, the Rockwall County Historical Foundation and the Rockwall County Genealogical Society.

Shirley is survived by her sons: Aaron Lee Adair and husband Fred Wheeler and Amery Wynn Adair; daughter: Alyssa Ann (Adair) Hendrick, husband Mark, and their children: Cody and Kelley; sisters: Mildred Coffin, Freeda VanTol and Gloriajean Buchanan; and brothers: Bernard Brown and Randall Brown.
