The Rockwall Police Department is warning all citizens of a possible IRS phone scam after a local resident received a suspicious call.
“Please be aware of these types of calls claiming to be with the IRS and threats of arrest or indictment. Tax season is here and many scams are utilizing tax season as a means to commit theft,” said a Rockwall Police Representative.
An unidentified individual called the police department and said that the number, 800-806-5816, sounded like a recorded message with a female voice. The automated message claimed it was from the IRS and the caller was told to call back within 24 hours.
Luckily, the caller recognized the message was a fraud and alerted the authorities immediately.
“As a general rule, the IRS will not contact you by telephone, email (or Text). Correspondence is usually accomplished through registered mail,” said the Police correspondent. “Many of these calls originate outside of the US. Should you receive any calls of this nature, please be cautious when responding and do not provide personal information unless you are certain of who you are speaking with.”
